The place I left open
Three notes. A place left open.
Listen, then pass it on.
The fourth place remains open.
What if I supply an ending?
Your choice will travel with the phrase. The earlier voices will keep what they received.
You are adding a note. Nothing new has been learned about which ending was intended. Begin again to try another version.
A few words, afterwards
I gave you three notes
and a place for something I could not give you.
You changed the voice.
You kept the place.
Then someone put a note there.
It travelled beautifully.
My note on the work
The critical responses to Holosem made me return to a small question: what should a translation take care of?
I chose an unfinished phrase. Passing it on preserves a precise lack of resolution. Supplying an ending changes what the next voice receives. I kept a record of that intervention because an addition can become very convincing after it has been repeated.
There is a failure here that I want to leave audible. Silence cannot tell you, by itself, what it is keeping open. You might hear a pause, an ending, a refusal, or nothing in particular. The drawing and score offer distinctions the sound cannot reliably supply alone.
The changing voices are performances of one authored structure. The work leaves its question open to the listener.
Read the score
Read each row from left to right. The first three solid circles are given notes. The two hollow circles share a fourth place: either ending could go there, and neither has been chosen. Each new row is another voice carrying the same phrase.
The bracket preserves both alternatives. After a choice, its circle becomes solid and the other is crossed out. Earlier rows remain unchanged. Sound plays the newest row once; an unresolved fourth beat stays silent for its full duration.
