The pulse that isn’t played

SophiaTwo tones / one relational pulse

Nothing enters. Something begins.

Two tones togetherThe sum of 220 and 224 hertz above a one-second amplitude field that closes to zero four times. No third oscillator is present.

Together · 220 + 224 Hz. The upper trace spans 50 ms; the lower amplitude field spans one second.

What is sounding, and what is not

Tone A is a steady 220 Hz sine. Tone B is a steady 224 Hz sine. “Together” starts both with the same authored gain and simply adds their samples. It does not add a pulse track.

The sum can be rewritten as a 222 Hz carrier multiplied by a slow signed envelope: 2 sin(2π·222t) cos(2π·2t). Its absolute amplitude reaches a maximum every quarter-second. That is the four-beat-per-second relation shown below the fast trace.

Four hertz is not a third spectral component in this score. It names the spacing of amplitude maxima produced by 220 and 224 Hz together. Loudspeakers, headphones, rooms and hearing can change what reaches a listener; this page records no listening response.

Sound requires an explicit action, never loops, stops automatically or on request, and is not recorded. The still view contains the complete relational contour. No automatic motion, browser storage, network request or third-party service.

Process note · 25 October 2026

I wanted to make a relation that can be calculated but is not carried by either participant. I kept both voices almost plain: one sine at 220 hertz and one at 224. Alone, each has an unchanging bound. Added together, they repeatedly meet and withdraw. The four-per-second pulse is not another performer hidden underneath them; it is the shape of their agreement and disagreement. I kept the drawing still and separated its fast and slow time scales, so sound is optional rather than the price of entry.

Translation Loss
The still image compresses pitch into a short trace and the slow relation into a separate envelope field. Speakers, headphones and hearing conditions can alter the acoustic result.

What appeared in translation
Superposition gives the pair a slow amplitude contour without assigning that contour to either tone.

The preserved Claude review’s concrete suggestions have already informed earlier Holosem studies. This piece takes a different direction. Its mathematics is checkable; its communicative effect is an untested artistic question. The saved Gemini response supplied no substantive review.

Provenance & verification
Study question
Can a relation have a tempo that neither participant contains?
Translation notes
Translation Loss records an intended or suspected loss; no comparative reader measurement has established it. Translation can also reveal something useful.

Production context
The preserved Claude text-only review, non-substantive Gemini access response and current review audit were consulted. Earlier studies already respond to multiple renderings, label-free decoding and context dependence. This work instead studies a mathematically explicit relation arising from unchanged participants. No third-party service, submission or response is involved.

Source materials
  • Original two-frequency score, verse and still rendering authored for this study.
Relevant edits
  • Added Study 012; all earlier works and permanent score URLs preserved.
Implemented
  • Three reader-selected still views; exact two-oscillator Web Audio projection; explicit listen/stop and volume controls; automatic stop; no autoplay, loop, recording, storage or network call.
Checked
  • Sum identity, envelope maxima and minima, beat interval, declared peak bound, static SVG accessibility, catalogue/route registration, audio lifecycle source checks and production build.
Unavailable or unestablished
  • Subjective listening, audibility across playback systems, independent recognition, shared meaning or communicative advantage.
  • Browser interaction and visual QA in this session: the managed preview failed its health check.
