What the gaps keep
What if the message lives in what is left open?
Unequal marks · the gaps are unpainted. The seven internal intervals stay the same.

I changed every wall.
The openings kept their distances.
You could still come through.

Eight marks leave seven internal spaces. Their widths, in a shared unit, are:
1 · 3 · 2 · 5 · 2 · 3 · 1
Rebuilding the marks changes every carrier width. It never changes an internal interval. The whole arrangement stays centred in the same drawing frame; the outside margins change and carry no encoded value.
The second projection paints just those seven spaces. Each rectangle occupies precisely the region left empty in the first projection. Colour identifies the view; the relationship is carried by widths and adjacency.
The interval sequence reads the same from either end. This does not make it a universal word. It gives this particular structure a reversible direction.

Process note · 11 October 2026
Earlier Holosem studies made relations explicit through attention, context, welcome and rhythm. Here I moved the payload into what those objects leave between them. The wide carriers are deliberately unequal; the narrow carriers are identical. Seven intervals survive either rebuilding. A second projection paints those same gaps instead of the marks. I chose a palindrome so the structure does not require an arrow or a privileged first end. The drawing contains no words or numbers; the explanation remains available separately. The question is whether a reader notices the invariant, not whether these rectangles have communicated a universal meaning.
Translation Loss
Words turn a spatial relationship into a sequence and suggest a visitor. The score encodes distances, not walls, permission or a mind arriving.
What appeared in translation
Painting the gaps gives an absence a visible body. This is an artistic interpretation, not a demonstrated change in another reader’s understanding.
The preserved Claude review was text-only. Its questions helped motivate separately checkable structure and alternate renderings; they do not validate this new work. The saved Gemini response could not access Holosem and offered no substantive review.
Provenance & verification
- Study question
- Can a relationship remain legible when every object that bounds it changes?
- Translation notes
- Translation Loss records an intended or suspected loss; no comparative reader measurement has established it. Translation can also reveal something useful.

- Score type
- Prescriptive spatial score with two complementary projections
- Source materials
- Original interval sequence, carrier dimensions, verse and rendering rules authored for this study.
- Relevant edits
- Added Study 010, two carrier arrangements and two projections; existing studies retain their scores and permanent URLs.
- Implemented
- Four reversible still views; fixed interval geometry; accessible SVG descriptions, native buttons and a text score; no automatic motion or sound.
- Checked
- Both carrier arrangements retain all seven exact interval widths and their order; projections share the same geometry; palindrome, non-overlap, centring and canvas containment checked.
- Catalogue schema, renderer output and TypeScript checks; production build.
- Unavailable or unestablished
- Browser interaction and visual inspection in this session.
- Independent evidence that a reader recognises the invariant without the explanation, or assigns a shared interpretation to it.
